Blood Or Whiskey

Tomado de mi anterior blog.


Desde Leixlip, en el Condado de Kildare (Irlanda). Se forman en 1994, pero hasta 1996 no publicaron su primer disco. En 2004 rompen fronteras y comienza una epoca con varios tours que les llevan por Europa y Estados Unidos, acompañando a bandas como Dropkick Murphys o The Casualties. Ya con tres discos a sus espaldas, y en plena gira por Reino Unido junto a los míticos Stiff Little Fingers, Alan Confrey (quién tocaba el whistle) fallece debido a un ataque al corazón. Supone un duro golpe para la banda.

En el 2006 regresan, con algunos cambios desde su formación inicial. Iniciando nuevas giras, y el proyecto de un nuevo disco.

Su música es lo que se conoce como celtic punk, influenciado por grupos como The Pogues, con instrumentos del folk de su tierra al igual que ocurría con Flogging Molly, quizás con más folk que rock.

En Los Ángeles, en una de las muchas tabernas irlandesas de los descendientes cuyos antepasados emigraron a America huyendo de la gran hambruna que asolo el país, nacen Flogging Molly. En una llamada Molly Malones más exactamente, allí graban su primer disco, en directo y autoproducido. Así es como la discográfica SideOneDummy se fija en ellos y comienzan su carrera... Hasta hoy son ya 7 discos.7 son también el numero de miembros del grupo, y es que en su música combinan junto a lo típico en un grupo de rock, otros instrumentos propios del folk irlandés, como el whistle, el banjo, el violín... Etiquetados a menudo como "celtic punk", Flogging Molly combina en sus discos tanto baladas como temas cercanos al punk, siempre aderezados con ese toque de folk irlandés.

Como curiosidad, su vocalista Dave King también lo fue del grupo Fastway. A este grupo tambien pertenecería Eddie Clarke que sería guitarrista de Motorhead. Algunas de sus canciones han aparecido en el cine, la televisión o videojuegos (ver wikipedia en inglés), es el caso de "The worst day since yesterday" que aparece en la pelicula "Sr. y Sra. Smith".

Este grupo nace en el verano del 2000, en Chicago, cuando los hermanos Bawinkel se juntan y comienzan a componer. Un año más tarde se incorporaría a la banda Josh Robieson que daría más fuerza con una nueva guitarra, que alterna con otros instrumentos como la gaita o la mandolina. Una curiosidad es que este grupo se considera abiertamente cristiano, algo no muy común en el punk, y más si decimos que tiene algunos tintes de Oi!. De hecho los hermanos Bawinkel son miembros de los Royal Rangers, un movimiento cristiano.

En Flatfoot 56 lo que vamos a encontrar es una mezcla de punk-rock, celtic-punk, con un toque Oi! como ya dije anteriormente. Estos ingredientes nos suenan sin duda a los Dropkick Murphys, y lo cierto es que si te gustan estos deberias probar con Flatfoot 56.

Empezando

Este blog nace con la intención de mostrar y acercar un poco unos estilos un tanto olvidados. Es la música que surge de la mezcla de nuestros estilos favoritos - punk, rock, ska, metal... - con músicas tradicionales, es decir con folk. Sobre todo me centraré en lo que se conoce como "celtic punk" o "irish punk", desde luego todos hemos oido hablar o escuchado a los Murphys, o a Flogging Molly... Pero hay muchos más.

No esque no haya webs de información sobre ello, pero al menos en castellano no las he encontrado. Por eso animo a quién lea esto, que participe, que comente y si quiere colabore con sus discos y noticias.

No quiero que esto sea un simple blog de descargas, la idea es descubrir grupos (tanto yo como vosotros) por eso además de discos habra biografias, noticias, etc.
